Start by having a conversation about your worksite standards — everything from punctuality and PPE to how you prefer tools handled and how to stay safe whilst working. Be clear with them about exactly what they need to do, for example if they will be late or won’t be at work, what PPE they need to wear when and how they should store tools. Apprentices may be new to work life, so setting a clear tone is key.
2. Be patient and lead by example.
First-year apprentices won’t know everything, and that’s okay. Encourage questions, demonstrate tasks and check their understanding before getting them to try something. You can take pride in being the first to introduce them to quality workmanship.
