Women In The Electrical Trades: A Bright Future

The electrical trades in New Zealand are witnessing a shift with the increasing presence of women apprentices. This change helps the industry in many ways. It makes it more diverse, improves skills and encourages new ideas. Recently qualified ATT apprentice, Alice Rabbitts is a great example of this positive trend. Her journey into the electrical trade shows the opportunities and rewards that await those who choose this path.

Alice embarked on her electrical apprenticeship at the beginning of 2021, immediately after finishing school. Her decision was driven by a blend of factors, including the practical and scientific aspects of electrical work, the potential for global travel and the support from her friends and family. A significant motivator was the chance to earn while learning, which allowed her to avoid the burden of student debt.

Kinetic Electrical, East Tamaki, Alice’s host business, has played a crucial role in her development. The company offered her a mix of interesting projects, ensuring she gained a wide range of experience. She has worked on a range of residential projects and in industrial settings, including a water treatment plant for Hastings District Council. These different projects have helped Alice understand the wider trade as well. They’ve given her both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

The benefits of having women like Alice in the electrical trades are significant. They bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, contributing to a more dynamic and inclusive workforce. Women in the trade also serve as role models, inspiring the next generation and helping to break
down traditional gender barriers.

As more women enter the field, the electrical trades in New Zealand are poised to become even more vibrant and innovative.
