What is Starlink and How Does It Work?

If you live in a rural area, travel off-grid, or just struggle with slow internet, Starlink might be the solution you need.
Developed by SpaceX, Starlink is a high-speed satellite internet service designed to work almost anywhere in the world. Unlike traditional internet that relies on underground cables or cell towers, Starlink connects you directly to satellites orbiting Earth, giving you fast and reliable internet—even in remote locations.
How Does Starlink Work?
Most satellite internet services rely on a few huge satellites positioned far out in space (about 35,000 km above Earth). While this can provide coverage, it also means high lag times (latency) and slower speeds. Starlink does things differently by using thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit, only 550 km above Earth. This shorter distance means faster speeds, lower latency, and a more stable connection.
Here’s how it works:
1. Satellites in Space – Starlink has a growing network of satellites that move around the Earth, constantly providing coverage.
2.The Starlink Dish – Users receive a Starlink kit, which includes a dish (antenna), router, and cables.
3. Data Transmission – The dish communicates with the satellites which then relay the data to and from ground stations connected to the internet. This process happens in milli-seconds, providing speeds that can rival fibre-optic connections in some areas.
Who is Starlink For?
Starlink is perfect for rural homes, farms, remote businesses, RV travellers, boats, and even disaster relief teams—essentially anyone who struggles with slow or unreliable internet. Since it doesn’t depend on physical cables, Starlink can bring high-speed internet to places where traditional broadband providers won’t or can’t reach.
What Makes Starlink Different?
  • Fast Speeds – Capable of reaching
  • 100-300 Mbps, with even faster speeds in some areas.
  • Low Latency – Much less lag than traditional satellite internet, making it great for gaming, video calls, and streaming.
  • Easy Setup – Just set up the dish with a clear view of the sky, and you’re connected.
Starlink is revolutionising internet access, especially for those in hard-to-reach places. Whether you’re in the countryside, up a mountain, or traveling in an RV, Starlink offers a fast, reliable way to stay connected—no matter where you are.
Digital Imports makes high-quality Starlink compatible mounts and adaptors all manufactured right here in New Zealand using NZ steel. These mounts are designed to handle harsh weather—strong winds, heavy rain, and blazing sun—so your dish stays secure and performs at its best.
They offer different mounting options to suit your needs, including:
  • Roof Mounts – Perfect for keeping your dish high and clear of obstructions. Available for both the Generation 2 and Generation 3 Starlink dish.
  • RV & Mobile Mounts – Ideal for those using Starlink on the go in an RV, caravan, or boat.
  • Adaptors for the Gen 3 dish
