Liam Lawson – A New Era For NZ Motorsport

Few trajectories captivate the imagination like that of a young driver making their debut in
Formula 1, and Liam Lawson, the rising star from New Zealand, has recently ascended to that
coveted stage. As he joins the elite ranks of F1, Lawson represents a hopeful chapter for aspiring
Kiwi racers, drawing attention not just for his talent but for the story behind his meteoric rise.

Born in 2002 in Hastings, Liam Lawson’s journey began at an impressively young age. His introduction to karting at around 6 years old set the course for a career that would defy the odds. Lawson quickly showed promise, asserting himself in various youth competitions across New Zealand – including two karting titles in 2014.

What sets Lawson apart is not just his talent behind the wheel, but also his tenacity and work ethic. Racing requires a rare blend of mental acuity, physical endurance, and technical knowledge. Lawson’s early years were marked by relentless practice, an unwavering commitment to improving his craft, and a deeply supportive family that prioritised his racing ambitions.

Lawson’s ascent through the ranks of motorsport was facilitated by his participation in various international formulas. He made a significant mark in the European Championship, where he showcased his prowess and ability to compete against the world’s best.

In 2022, Lawson began to compete in Formula 2. His impressive performances and podium finishes (including double podiums in Bahrain) earned him the respect of seasoned professionals and attention from top-tier teams. His ability to navigate the complexities of racing at high speed, coupled with strategic thinking and quick decision-making, laid a solid foundation for his eventual move to Formula 1.

In 2023, when injuries sidelined AlphaTauri’s (later RB) main drivers, Lawson received the call-up of a lifetime. Making his debut at the Dutch Grand Prix, he not only handled the pressure with poise but also finished in the points, solidifying his status as a driver to watch.

Liam drove in five GPs for Scuderia AlphaTauri and scored his first championship points with 9th in the Singapore GP to become just the sixth NZ driver in history to do so.

Responding to the challenge with a blend of confidence and composure, Lawson quickly gained admiration for his mature driving style and ability to learn from each race. His performances were characterised by calculated aggression, traits common among F1’s elite that prompted discussions about his longterm future in the sport.

In September 2024, Red bull Racing announced Liam as one of their regular drivers. He was promoted to a full-time driver with Visa Cash App RB Formula One.

Liam Lawson’s arrival in F1 marks a significant milestone for New Zealand motorsports, a nation that has produced its fair share of talented drivers, most notably the legendary Bruce McLaren. Lawson’s success has reignited interest in motorsport among Kiwis, especially the youth, encouraging them to pursue their racing dreams. His journey serves as a reminder that with determination, talent, and the right support, even the most ambitious dreams are within reach.
