2025 Sees Changes to Electrical Apprenticeships

These important changes are helping support both apprentices and trade businesses, especially during tough economic times. They’re also helping apprentices with their training by simplifying the process of gaining an electrical qualification.

Modifications to the Fees Free programme, set to take effect January 2025, will shift the focus of financial support from covering the first year of study to the final year of an apprentice’s training. This change is intended to provide much-needed financial relief to apprentices as they near the completion of their training. The aim is to reduce dropout rates and aid in a smoother transition into full-time employment within the industry. Electrical apprentices in their final year, who haven’t previously utilised the first-year Fees Free scheme, will benefit from having their fees covered.

In addition, the Apprenticeship Boost programme has been reduced to one year to only cover the first year of an apprenticeship. However, the government has extended the programme until 30 June 2028. The extension of the programme will continue to support employers in their efforts to upskill their workforce and drive economic growth in their communities. It not only benefits apprentices, but also the industry by ensuring a steady supply of skilled tradies for years to come.

The introduction of the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Trade (Level 4) – General Electrical (4204) marks a significant change in the structure of electrical apprenticeships. This certificate combines the previously separate domestic, commercial and industrial electrical work into a single, complete apprenticeship. This change simplifies the process for individuals aiming to become fully qualified electricians. The programme includes online, on-job and electrical safety courses, providing flexibility and making it easier for apprentices to balance work and study. For host electrical companies, this new structure means they can expect a more consistent and comprehensive training schedule for apprentices.

These key changes are a strong effort to help the electrical industry. They’ll make sure that the workforce is well-trained and financially supported, so they can handle the challenges of the future.
